Richard Tyrus Korecki\, M.A. \nThursday\, January 16\, 2024\n12:30-1:00 pm EST \nAll are welcome! \nDescription: Despite growing evidence for the beneficial effects of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs)\, the pathways through which MBIs such as Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) work are poorly understood. Thus\, the current paper examined five theory-based mechanisms through which MAPs might influence depressive symptoms in younger breast cancer survivors\, including two general emotion regulation strategies (rumination and self-kindness) as well as three stressor-specific cognitive and emotional processes relevant to depression (intrusive thoughts about cancer\, cancer-related worry\, and meaning and peace in life). Results identified both general and stressor-specific mediators of MAPs’ effects on depression\, which were evident at both post-intervention and at 6-month follow-up (FU)\, highlighting key pathways that could be leveraged to optimize intervention outcomes in breast cancer survivors and other groups. \nPresenter: Mr. Korecki is a fourth-year doctoral student in Health Psychology at the University of California\, Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:Conveners: Thomas Ritz (Southern Methodist University) & Melissa Rosenkranz (University of Wisconsin-Madison) \n  \nBackground & Aims: \nAsthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects close to 350 million people worldwide. As one of Franz Alexander’s “Holy Seven” psychosomatic diseases\, it has confounded medical and psychological scientists for a long time. Biomedical research has made strides in recent decades\, highlighting roles of airway hyperreactivity\, T-helper cell-driven inflammation\, epithelial damage\, and remodeling of the airways as major factors in the course of the disease. DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce the dates for the 2023\, in person\, SBSM Annual Meeting.  This will be a time to reconnect and renew relationships with our colleagues. \nThe SBSM Annual Meeting is an open scientific and clinical forum where investigators from allied disciplines pool their knowledge\, consider problems of conceptual relationships\, and develop ideas that will stimulate further research. \nThe meeting is devoted to the presentation of scientific papers\, symposia\, workshops\, poster sessions\, and invited lectures\, and special attention is given to networking opportunities to foster ongoing relationships within the community. \nMore about the theme:  Health is not merely the absence of disease\, or illness\, but rather a state of well-being at the physical\, psychological and social level. In light of Engel’s biopsychosocial model\, as researchers and clinicians in the field of Psychosomatic Medicine\, we systematically consider medical\, psychological and social factors\, and their complex interactions to understand illness. Importantly\, there is a fourth factor to consider\, which is our environment\, the world we live in. Our current world brings several major global challenges\, among which climate change\, structural adversity and racism\, and the global economic and personal consequences of war. It is eminent that we address these challenges also in the context of health. \nThe 2023 meeting will focus on promoting health and preventing (further) disease\, with the best science we have\, by addressing the following challenges: \nChallenge 1: Promoting health in an uncertain world. This first theme pillar comprises a solicitation for research on identification of at risk individuals on different levels (individual\, social\, environmental)\, biobehavioral change efforts to promote health and the role of different mechanisms (behavioral\, social\, environmental) in the prevention of disease. \nChallenge 2: Affecting biopsychosocial mechanisms. This second pillar solicits research on etiological and pathophysiological mechanistic pathways that may be promising to target in primary and secondary prevention and treatment. \nChallenge 3:  Maintaining the best health possible.  The third and final pillar deals with tertiary prevention\, or how can we maximize outcomes and prevent further disease. This pillar solicits research focusing on biopsychosocial and environmental predictors of disease progression\, and potential ways to maximize outcomes for patients.

SUMMARY:2022 Patricia R. Barchas Award in Sociophysiology Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Gregory Miller\, PhD \nTitle:  Toward Understanding the Health Consequences of Childhood Adversity \nDescription: \nChildren exposed to economic adversity in the early years of life show increased susceptibility to chronic diseases of aging\, like heart disease\, when they reach their 50’s and 60’s. These findings raise challenging but fascinating mechanistic questions: How does early adversity “get under the skin” in a manner that is sufficiently persistent to affect vulnerability to diseases that arise many decades later? Why are some children vulnerable to these risks\, whereas others are protected? In this lecture I will discuss three emerging themes from our ongoing research. First\, this work suggests that early adversity gets embedded in cells of the innate immune system\, instantiating a pro-inflammatory phenotype that probably contributes to the chronic diseases of aging. Second\, we are seeing evidence that this phenotype arises as a result of excessive crosstalk between the innate immune system and brain circuitries involved in threat and reward processing. Finally\, research on moderators has revealed powerful buffering effects of nurturant parenting\, which offsets many of the risks associated with early adversity. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

DESCRIPTION:“What has neuroscience done for you lately? It’s future role in translational psychosomatic science.” \nIn recent years major advances have been made in our understanding of brain-body interactions that are highly relevant to psychosomatic science. These advances\, captured by the term “computational neuroscience\,” are both theoretically rich and quantitatively precise\, but also challenging to understand. The purpose of this webinar is to explain some of its basic principles and then show their relevance for psychosomatic science. This webinar is intended specifically for psychosomatic researchers and clinicians who are not neuroscientists. It will include four parts: 1) a brief introductory primer on basic concepts in computational neuroscience; 2) an example of state of the art research in this area addressing the role of expectations (and their violation) in the perceptions of normal and restricted breathing and their neural substrates; 3) an intervention to reduce anxiety consisting of training that enhances the accuracy of interoceptive sensory perception; and 4) a strategy for introducing a computational approach to psychosomatic research in an area in which it has not yet been incorporated\, illustrated by the example of perceived racism and hypertension.
