Fellows of SBSM (FSBSM)

FELLOW STATUS IN THE SOCIETY FOR BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL SCIENCE AND MEDICINE

Fellow Status in the Society for Biopsychosocial Science and Medicine (FSBSM) is designed to recognize sustained excellence in scholarship and/or professional contributions to the field of psychosomatic science and commitment to the Society for Biopsychosocial Science and Medicine among members who are mid-career and beyond. Through FSBSM, we seek to recognize, honor, and sustain the engagement of members in advancing psychosomatic science and serving the Society for Biopsychosocial Science and Medicine.

Eligibility for application for fellow status:

1. Must be a full member of SBSM for at least 7 years;
2. Must be more than 10 years past final degree or past completion of clinical training;
3. Membership dues must be up to date at time of application;
4. Rank of Associate Professor or higher (or equivalent mid-level scientist or practitioner or educator). The committee recognizes there are rare exceptions and these will be considered.
5. Candidates must demonstrate a track-record of scientific, clinical, and/or educational, accomplishments that support the mission of SBSM. Examples include:

• Impactful scholarship in any area of psychosomatic medicine as evidenced by independent grant funding and/or numerous first- or senior-author publications.
• Evidence of effective teaching or mentorship (e.g. teaching award)
• Design and implementation of curricula related to psychosomatic medicine
• Promulgation of new or updated medical or public health approaches with relevance to psychosomatic medicine.
• Establishment or implementation of a novel clinical approach for improving patient care with relevance to psychosomatic medicine.
• Promotion of clinical trials, epidemiological studies, public health or translational techniques in the clinical setting that advance psychosomatic medicine.

6. Candidates must demonstrate meaningful and sustained excellence and engagement with SBSM. Examples include:

a) attending or participating in annual and/or other SBSM sponsored events, such as

• Attending SBSM meetings
• Presenting oral or poster sessions
• Being a moderator or discussant
• Contributing to a pre-conference course
• Delivery of continuing education such as webinars or workshops
• Having trainees attend and present at the annual meeting and/or other sponsored events.
• Encouraging colleagues to submit their work to the annual meeting

AND

b) Significant volunteer service to SBSM, such as

• Active membership on an SBSM committee, subcommittee, or task force.
• Served as an officer, chair, or co-chair of an SBSM committee or task force.
• Young Investigator Colloquium mentor
• Membership on the editorial board for Psychosomatic Medicine or service as a reviewer for the journal for several years.

Recognition, Acknowledgement, and Benefits

• Newly elected fellows will be recognized by SBSM leadership during a special session at the annual meeting and will be presented with a Fellowship certificate commemorating their career achievement in psychosomatic medicine suitable for framing.
• Fellows will be recognized with a pin, “FSBSM” listed after their names in the SBSM directory, and by “Fellow” nametag ribbons at the annual meeting.
• Fellows will be entitled to use the designation Fellow of SBSM as a credential
• Annual reception for Fellows at meetings

Responsibilities of FSBSM

Fellows of SBSM are ambassadors for the Society’s prestige and standards of excellence. By serving as role models they help solidify SBSM’ commitment to the advancement of both science and practice as well as offering guidance and support to our younger members. The expectation is that Fellows will maintain active participation in the Society and continued contributions to the science of psychosomatic medicine.
