This 41 minute film focuses on the community of Jobos Bay in Puerto Rico and the climate change challenges and environmental injustices they are confronting. More information about the film can be found at the El poder del pueblo website.

An interactive discussion with attendees will be led by members of the Climate Change, Sustainability, and Health Special Interest Group and by

Ruth Santiago, JD, LLM, a community and environmental lawyer who works with grass-roots environmental advocacy groups in Puerto Rico.

This is a unique and important opportunity for the SBSM community to raise its collective awareness of the environmental issues affecting residents of Puerto Rico before traveling to San Juan for the 2023 Meeting.

There are plans to complement the screening and discussion with an in-person event at the annual meeting, which will include a panel of local residents, scholars, and activists.

Although it is not required, we encourage SBSM members who register for this virtual film screening and discussion to support community recovery from Hurricane Fiona by contributing to Apoyo Legal Al Emprendimiento Comunitario, Inc, which will directly help IDEBAJO (the Eco-development Initiative of Jacobs Bay), and to support ongoing efforts to make professional conferences more sustainable.
